Fixing Baofeng UV-B5 broken battery latch using 3D printer

Skraćena veza: https://pedja.supurovic.net/veza/9740

I’ve got UV-B5 years ago. It survived lots of use and still served fine. There was one glitch – in some moment latch that keeps battery locked was broken. Radio was still usable but it happens from time to time that battery slips out of socket and radio silently turns off. It was quite annoying but hardly fixable issue.

Until today.

As I recently got myself 3D printer (Prusa I3 MK3S) I get to an idea to model and print replacement part. As every experienced computer expert, I first looked if someone else already did that. And indeed, Thingverse member Olex had the same issue and already did modeling. […]

Universal CAT and programming USB to serial TTL interface for ham radio

Skraćena veza: https://pedja.supurovic.net/veza/9536

Some years ago I posted article describing Universal CAT and programming USB to RS232 TTL interface for ham radio that I made.

Here is small update, adapter for YAESU FT-8900, FT-8800 and alike radios.

FT-8900 and FT-8800 and some other Yaesu radios use two wire interface. One wire is ground and other is both RX and TX. This is also known as CIV-I interface used in Icom radios.

CIV-I interface is quite simple. There is a diode (universal like 1N14148) connecting RX and TX, oriented cathode toward TX, with one 10K pull up resistor to 5V on RX. […]

Baofeng UV-B5 / UV-B6 enhancing modulation

Skraćena veza: https://pedja.supurovic.net/veza/8998

One of the issues of UV-B5 is that it has shallow modulation when passing through some repeater systems. That is common issue with Chinese radios. R4HV posted on YouTube explanation how to fix that. As his post is in Russian language it does not popup easily on search sites.

However, modulation fix is rather simple: one resistor has to be removed and new connection made using 150 K resistor . That is all. Check his video.

Here are pictures before and after the modification:

Universal CAT and programming USB to RS232 TTL interface for ham radio

Skraćena veza: https://pedja.supurovic.net/veza/7437

As soon as I got first two ham radio rigs, I needed to connect them both to PC, to program memories or use CAT control from logging software. I realized that it is impractical to have as many USB to RS323 adapters as rigs.

As serial connection for radio requires just RX, TX and GND lines, and it is the same for most of modern radio stations. It is actually only radio connector that is different – signaling is the same.

It showed up quite easy to build simple multirig adapter. All you need to do is to use existing USB to serial interface adapter, cut it’s cable in two and insert male and female three pin 3.5 mm jack (commonly used as stereo audio connectors). […]

How to use Baofeng UV-B5 flash light switch for LCD background light

Skraćena veza: https://pedja.supurovic.net/veza/7318

Soon after I got him this nice walkie-talkie, my brother Nenad (YU1TTL) quickly found out how to overcome missing feature of UV-B5: LCD background light is turned on only when some keys are pressed and stays on far a very short time. He managed to use flash switch which is used in UV-B6 version but in UV-B5 has no function.

He decided to put up instructions on my blog so others can benefit of this modification. So here it is:

How to use Baofeng UV-B5 flash light switch for LCD background light

by Nenad Supurović YU1TTL

These are instructions for disassembling Baofeng UV-B5 walkie-talkie and also how to modify it to enable the third (Flash light) button to switch the LCD and keyboard back-light on/off
